New Delhi, 7 May 2020 – Worried of standing in a long queue for buying your favorite beer? Well, if reports are to be believed, popular food delivery app Zomato might soon start delivering liquor at your doorstop. However, the service would be strictly limited to the zones which are relatively less affected by Covid-19.
According to Reuters, Zomato CEO Mohit Gupta suggested the idea in a business proposal to industry body International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI). “We believe that a technology-enabled home delivery based solution can promote responsible consumption of alcohol,” he wrote.
The government has allowed the sale of non-essential items including liquor in several states such as Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh among others. However, due to crowd and chaos, several shops were closed across the nation. The rule of social distancing went for a toss and people had to come empty handed even after standing for hours in the line.
The demand for alcohol has thus increased and Zomato aims to milk the high demand. Zomato has already started delivering groceries and house essentials amid lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, its competitor Swiggy also penetrated into grocery deliveries during the same time.
ISWAI executive chairman Amrit Kiran Singh told Reuters, “The challenge is to ensure revenue from alcohol continues to be available. It is imperative they (states) reduce the load on the retail counter… by encouraging home delivery.”
Although, at present there are no legal provisions in India to allow home delivery of liquor, making them might be a good idea for government as well as beer lovers!
